Kindness #3

Yesterday I was playing hockey with little kids on the ice. We were all playing a game together. I knew I could absolutely dominate but instead I would try the best I could to get the little kids on my team to score. I wanted to do this because it would help the little kids build up confidence and make them want to stay in hockey. It made me feel good because I got to see them celebrate and be happy. I knew it made them feel good because they were celebrating like crazy.

Kindness #2

On Wednesday at school it was snowy. In term 1 I monitored one of the grade 2 classes. I saw one of the kids who I used to lunch monitor having trouble getting onto his sled. It was because the snow way slippery so he would slide down the hill before he could get on. So I went over and helped him by holding him back by his jacket while he was getting onto his sled so that he didn’t slide down. When he was ready I gave him a push. I ran down the hill beside him and carried his sled back up the hill. I did that with him for the rest of recess. It made him feel good because he could go sledding, it also made me feel good because I knew it made him feel good.

Kindness #1

Today is Sunday and it’s snowing like crazy. My mom told me and my sister to shovel the driveway. When we were done I decided to go and shovel our neighbors side of the sidewalk. For some reason it’s really wide. I decided to do this because our neighbors run a store and they don’t have much time to do something like that. It made me feel good to do something like that because now they don’t have to do it. I think it made them feel happy and relieved because they don’t have to do it now.

Two

Two is a squeal to the book One, both written and illustrated by Kathryn Otoshi. I think the theme of two is friendship. The book starts out with One and Two and they are best friends. They say, “One, Two I can count on you, till the end we will be best friends!” But then one day three jumps and becomes Ones best friend. They say “One, Three odds will be!” Then Three runs off with One to go play with the other odds. Two is sad so he goes over to Zero, Four and Six. They tell him to ignore One and Three but he can’t. He was feeling really blue, then he started to turn green, because he was jealous of One and Three. Then eventually the Odds and the Evens got into a fight. The Odds started saying stuff like “Even’s will get Even!” They fought and fought and Two was getting tired of it. So eventually after getting a pep talk from Zero he stepped in between the two sides that were fighting and broke the fight up. After they sorted it out One came over to Two and asked, “Two, can I still count on you?” Two accepted his apology and shouted “One, Two I can count on you, till the end we will be best friends!” Then they were happy once again. I think that the message of the story is about friendship and it’s ups and downs. Sometimes you might have to let go forever and sometime you might be able to work it out.

One

One is an amazing book written and illustrated by Kathryn Otoshi. The theme of book is about learning about how to stand up to bully’s. How to find your inner confidence and turn that bully away. The book starts off with Blue. Blue is a quiet, shy colour. But Red, Red is a hotheaded bully. He starts bullying Blue by saying “Red is hot and Blue is not.” Then Blue gets sad. The other colours comfort him but they don’t say anything to Red. So every time Red bullied Blue he got bigger and bigger. Eventually he got so big that he started bullying all the colours. But the one day, One came along. All the other colours are now small and flat. So he said his usuall thing to Blue, “Red is hot, Blue is not” When he tried to do it to One, he stood tall. He didn’t let Red get to him. So Red, got smaller and smaller and smaller. Then the other colours started to become numbers too. Lastly Blue became 6 and Red got sad, he kept getting smaller and smaller as he walked away. But then Blue called out to Red and said that he could be 7. Red became 7 and they all lived happily ever after.

Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorlilla

The story about Ivan the gorilla is a story written by Kathrine Applegate and illustrated by G. Brian Karas. The story is about a gorilla who is taken from the wild by poachers, sold to a shopping mall where he is then put in a cage in the mall. 27 years later he is released after protests by people all over America. He is taken in by the Atlantic Zoo which has lots of gorillas. I think the theme of this book is kindness towards animals. I think this because Ivan is not treated with kindness until he is placed at the Atlantic Zoo where there is a lot of gorillas. I think that the message of he book is to make sure there is animal kindness around the world. If you see that a company or someone is not treating an animal with kindness, make it known. Start protests, make signs and do the best you can to make sure that animal gets the kindness that it deserves. I personally think that this was a great book. It shows that all animals deserve to be treated with kindness and I think that’s really important.

What Do You Do With An Idea?

What Do You Do With An Idea is a book written by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom. It is a book about a little boy who is afraid and not sure what to do with his idea.

One day a little boy has an idea. He doesn’t know what to do with it. He tries to leave it, but it won’t leave him. He didn’t want to show people his idea because he was afraid, afraid of what people will think. But it was so special. It got bigger as we got closer. It wanted a lot of attention. He finally worked up enough courage to show it to people, but they crushed it. They laughed and said it was weird. The little boy was now ashamed of his idea. But then the little boy was starting to think differently,Β  “what do they know? It’s my idea after all.” So they continued to get closer and closer, the little boy was feeding it, making it a better house with an open roof and giving it lots of attention. Then one day the idea sprouted wings. It got bigger and bigger until it wasn’t just a part of him, it was everywhere! Now the little boy knew what to do with ideas, “𝒸𝒽𝒢𝓃𝑔𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 π“Œπ‘œπ“‡π“π’Ή.”

I really like this story because it encourages kids to get there ideas out there. People may laugh. People may say it will never work. But you have to feed the idea, you have to play with the idea, you have to give it attention. You have to keep pushing so that your idea can

Alfred Nobel : The Man Behind the Peace Prize

Image result for alfred nobel book

This Alfred Nobel story, is almost his biography in a picture book. It is a great story that teaches kids how to persevere and push through when times get tough.

In the story it is talking about Alfred’s adventures in making nitroglycerin. He is experimenting to try and make nitroglycerin safer to handle. He is working day in and day out, getting help from dad and his brother. But when they his brother is working in the shop without Alfred and then, BOOM! The factory blew up, killing 5 people, including his brother. Alfred was really determined to make it safer. Two years later, he decided to try and put sand in the nitroglycerin, and then roll it into a pipe. The builders could use the pipe to blast only in the area they wished. It became a worldwide hit and Alfred was famous. Alfred thought that it would also help stop wars because people would be afraid of the powerful blasts. Turns out people were using it to fight more. Alfred was sad because there was nothing he could do about it. He when he died in 1896 on his will he wrote that he would use his estate to hand out prizes to people every year. He made different prizes but one of the ones that became the most famous was the peace prize.

I like this story because it teaches kids about perseverance. Although you may go through a lot of ups and downs you have to keep moving. You may not think you have succeeded but you could have without knowing it.

Chopsticks

Chopsticks is a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Scott Magoon. Chopsticks are best friends and they are inseparable and they have been since they were born. No one has seen them apart. One day they get split apart during a stunt.

When they get split apart one of them goes to the hospital. Chopstick is staying with the other Chopstick in the hospital and the hurt Chopstick tells the other Chopstick that he has to go out and do stuff. The Chopstick thinks he can’t do anything but when he goes he is proven wrong. He finds out that he can do so many things like play hockeyΒ  play pickup sticks, playing catapult, conducting music. When Chopsticks get back together and become a whole they realize that they can do so many more things. They can play the drums, they can paint, they can draw and they can still do all the things that they can do before. At the end they have a toast to Chopsticks. “To standing on our own, and to sticking together.”

I think the message of this book is that you have to be independent, while still helping and getting help from your friends. I really like this book because it teaches kids to be independent. It shows that you can’t always rely on your friend or mom to help you with everything.

Spoon

Spoon is a children’s book written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Scott Magoon. It is about a little spoon who is jealous about his friends.

Spoon talking to his parents and they ask him why he is bent out of shape. He says “oh nothing,”. He goes on to explain that he is jealous of his friend knife because he can cut and spread. His parents respond with “Yeah he is quite spiffy that way.” Then he says he is jealous of fork because she gets to go basically EVERYWHERE. His parents respond with “Yeah fork really gets out there and makes herself useful.” Then he says he is jealous of chopsticks because everyone thinks there exotic and cool. His parents just respond with, “chopsticks are really something else aren’t they.” The thing that spoon doesn’t realize is that all his friends were saying that very minute. Knife was saying he wished that people would be silly with him just like Spoon. Fork was saying that Spoon is lucky because he gets to measure stuff. Chopsticks were saying they wish they could be Spoon because he could go places by himself, the Chopsticks would be useless without each other. When his parents tuck him into bed they say, “just remember how lucky you are, your friends will never know what it is like to dive head first into a bowl of ice-cream or to be able to clink against a cereal bowl or swirl around in a mug or relax in a hot cup of tea. Spoon was really happy to hear that. He got into his parents side of the drawer and cuddled with them.

I really like this book because it shows you that one, someone will always have something that you want and two, you have to be grateful for what you have. It shows kids that someone will always have more than you, but you just have to be grateful for what you have.
