Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress

Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress is a book written by Christine Baldacchino and illustrated by Isabelle Malenphant. I think this is a book about being true to yourself. Morris loves going to school. He loves painting and singing the loudest, and most of all he loves dress up time. He loves this tangerine dress that reminds him of the sun and tigers and his mothers hair. But the other kids make fun of him for wearing it. They say things like “boys can’t wear dresses” and “you can’t sit with us we don’t want to turn into a girl.” On Friday he tells his mom he has a stomach ache. When he thinks about the kids talking about him and making fun of him he actually gets a stomach ache. When he finally feels better he decides to make a painting. He paints himself on an elephant with tigers walking around him while he is on the elephant in the tangerine dress. When he goes to school the next day and asks to play with the boys and go in their spaceship, but they say “only if you take off the dress”. But he doesn’t, so he goes and builds his own spaceship with tigers an elephants on the planet that he flew to. The other boys want to come see so Morris lets them and they go to a planet that they have never been before. Then one of the girls ask if they can use the dress but Morris says that she could use it when he is done. So she says “boys don’t wear dresses.” but then Morris says, “this one does.” I think that the message of this book is being who you actually are. If your a boy and you want to wear a dress, go for it. Don’t let others tell you who should be. I think this is a really good book because of it’s message.
